Dr. Jennifer Herron, Chief of Staff at Cedar River Animal Hospital recently partnered with the Auburn Valley Humane Society in Washington, bringing advanced laparoscopic techniques to pets in need. What began as an opportunity to refine her surgical skills quickly became a meaningful way to give back to the community.
Inspired by a continuing education course at Colorado State University, Dr. Herron learned how other veterinarians had collaborated with local Humane Societies to gain hands-on experience. She embraced the idea, recognizing it as a win-win: the Humane Society benefits from specialized care, pets receive life-changing procedures, and she continues to grow her surgical skills.
With guidance from her colleague, Dr. Mihai Aluas, also from Cedar River Animal Hospital, who has years of laparoscopic experience, Dr. Herron successfully performed her first laparoscopic ovariectomy and gastropexy. She noted the challenges of mastering hand-eye coordination and using her non-dominant hand, but also the immense value of repetition in building confidence and precision.
This collaboration is only the beginning. Dr. Herron plans to complete many more procedures with the Humane Society, each one strengthening her skills while directly improving the lives of animals. Her initiative is a shining example of the heart within our network, and her drive to grow as a veterinarian while giving back to animals in need truly embodies the spirit of Vetcor. We're proud to have her on our team and encourage others looking for similar opportunities to explore our careers page.
