September is National Suicide Prevention Month, which is a time to help raise awareness by spreading hope and sharing vital information to discuss suicide prevention. At Vetcor our mission is to enhance not only the health and well-being of pets but also the people who care for them. We offer resources to our team members to make sure they have the tools they need to take on the challenges of veterinary medicine. Additionally, there are many trusted organizations that offer the public information on suicide prevention, such as the American Veterinary Medical Association, Not One More Vet, and the National Institute of Mental Health.
The American Veterinary Medical Association writes, “The more proactive we are in discussing mental health and suicide prevention in safe and effective ways, the better we’ll be able to reduce stigma and promote help-seeking.” You can check out their resources, which include free training on suicide prevention, as well as webinars that qualify for continuing education credit.
We have been fortunate enough to have Not One More Vet speakers at our internal events. Their website offers many free resources that support the important work of reducing suicide deaths in the veterinary community through education, resources, and support.
The National Institute of Mental Health is another place to access tools and resources about suicide prevention. They offer information through their YouTube channel and in their articles under mental health information on their website.
Remember, seeking professional help for depression and other mental health concerns is a sign of strength, not weakness. If you are a Vetcor team member, please reach out to your hospital manager to find even more wellbeing resources.
