Mental Wellness: Mental Health in the Workplace

Mental Wellness: Mental Health in the Workplace
Mental health at work

October 18, 2024

This month, the World Federation for Mental Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) have turned their focus to mental health in the workplace for World Mental Health Day. WHO highlighted that with over 60% of the global population at work, the work environment significantly impacts employees’ well-being, affecting millions worldwide. At Vetcor, we recognize that the mental health of our team members is crucial to their overall health and their careers in veterinary medicine.

The Importance of Mental Health at Work

Our hospitals and service centers are more than just places where we earn a living, they are environments where we spend a significant portion of our lives. The mental health of our team members is directly linked to their creativity and overall job satisfaction. Neglecting mental health can lead to burnout and high turnover rates.

Current Challenges

Despite growing awareness, many workplaces still struggle to address mental health effectively. Stigma, lack of resources, and insufficient training for managers are common barriers. We are proud of our ever-growing list of tools and support offered through our Employee Assistance Program and the additional resources we continue to enhance. Through these programs, we are working to dispel the myth that disclosing mental health issues could negatively impact someone’s career.

Ways to Foster Mental Wellbeing as an Employee

Employees can help build a workplace where mental health is prioritized, and everyone feels valued and supported.

Open Communication: Encourage and participate in open discussions about mental health. Sharing experiences and listening to others can help reduce stigma and create a supportive environment.

Support Colleagues: Be attentive to the well-being of your coworkers. Offer support and lend a listening ear if someone seems to be struggling. Sometimes, just knowing someone cares can make a big difference.

Utilize Resources: Make use of available mental health resources, such as counseling services or wellness programs. This not only benefits you but also sets an example for others to follow. For Vetcor team members these resources can be found in the Employee Assistance Program and additional programs outlined in our benefits materials.

Participate in Training: Engage in any mental health training or workshops offered by your organization. This can equip you with the skills to recognize signs of mental health issues and provide appropriate support.

Create a Positive Environment: Contribute to a positive and inclusive workplace culture. Small acts of kindness, appreciation, and respect can significantly impact the overall atmosphere.

Speak Up: If you notice policies or practices that negatively impact mental health, speak up and suggest improvements. Constructive feedback can lead to positive changes in the workplace.

For us, prioritizing mental health in the workplace is not just a moral imperative; it is integral to the culture at Vetcor. A mentally healthy workforce is more engaged and better equipped to serve the pets and clients who depend on us. Let’s commit to fostering workplaces where mental health is valued and supported.
